Damaging winds this afternoon, temps to plummet 30 degrees

With wind gusting up to 60 mph, Connecticut is under both a High Wind Warning and Wind Advisory on Friday.

Temperatures are also expected to drop nearly 30 degrees from a high of around 51 degrees on Friday to a low of 24 degrees at 7 a.m. Saturday.

And, there is a Coastal Flood Advisory from 8 to 11 a.m. for the Fairfield County shoreline with tides about one foot above normal.

Finally, there’s some snow in the forecast.

The strongest winds are expected in southeast Connecticut with southwest winds blowing between 30 to 40 mph with possible gusts up to 65 mph.

The rest of the state will have winds between 20 to 30 mph with gusts between 44 to 57 mph.

Both the wind warning and advisory are in effect from noon to 7 p.m. Friday.

“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” the NWS says.

“People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels ofyour home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.”

The strong winds are from a low pressure system that will strengthen as it moves towards the region today.

The timeframe for these damaging winds is from noon through the remainder of the afternoon. Winds remain quite gusty into the evening, but winds of those magnitudes are not expected as the evening progresses.

According to the NWS’s hourly forecasts, the following are the estimated times of the strongest winds:

Greenwich/Stamford: 1 to 4 p.m. with gusts of 48 mph.

Bridgeport: 2 to 4 p.m. with gusts of 49 mph.

Danbury: 3 to 5 p.m. with gusts of 45 mph.

New Haven: 3 to 5 p,m. with gusts of 48 mph.

New London: 2 to 5 p.m. with gusts of 57 mph.

Torrington: 3 to 5 p.m. with gusts of 44 mph.

Middletown: 3 to 5 p.m. with gusts of 48 mph.

The weekend is looking sunny and chilly with highs in the mid to upper 30s.

Late Sunday night and early Monday morning, there is a 50 percent chance of snow.

Friday: Rain, mainly before noon. Patchy fog before 9 a.m. High near 51. Breezy, with an east wind 6 to 11 mph becoming west 19 to 24 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 48 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 24. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. West wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 37. Wind chill values between 15 and 25. West wind 8 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 18. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 38.
