Westport's Speer selected by Cleveland Indians in MLB draft

Former Staples and Columbia baseball star David Speer, 21, was selected in the 27th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball entry draft by the Cleveland Indians on Saturday.

Speer, a left handed pitcher, went 7-2 with a 1.86 ERA in 2014 for Columbia to earn Ivy League Pitcher of the Year. In 12 starts, Speer threw six complete games and had an eye-popping 75:7 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 87 innings of work.

Speer went 6-3 with a 2.34 ERA in his junior season to make the All-Ivy League first team.

In his final start for Columbia, Speer pitched eight innings and allowed two runs in a 6-2 win over Dartmouth May 10 to help Columbia win its second straight Ivy League title. Speer missed this season's NCAA regionals as a result of an appendectomy.

Speer finished his collegiate career with an 18-7 record with a 2.96 ERA and 198 strikeouts in 231 innings pitched.
