WESTPORT - A 38-year-old Westport man has been arrested following a domestic assault early Saturday morning.
Police were contacted at 4:16 a.m. by a woman who claimed she had been involved in a physical altercation with her boyfriend. She reported that she initially had been involved in a verbal exchange with Bartholomew “Buddy” Valiante at her residence that had turned into a physical confrontation.
Police said she alleged that at some point during the argument, Valiante began to get into her personal space and shove her at which time she attempted to defend herself.
She reported that a physical struggle ensued “during which he had struck her several times in the face, had pulled her hair and at one point had choked her,” police said.
She reported that while being choked she had struck Valiante in the face with a small wooden shelf in self-defense.
At some point during the struggle she told Valiante that she planned to call police, at which time, she alleged, that he threw her phone into the rear yard of the residence (where it was located by officers), prompting her to go to a neighbor’s home to contact police.
Officers said she sustained multiple injuries consistent with her story.
Valiante later went to police headquarters reporting that his girlfriend had initially become physical with him and claimed that he was acting in self-defense.
Based on the investigation, Valiante was charged with third-degree strangulation, assault and disorderly conduct.
He was held on a $10,000 bond pending arraignment in Norwalk Superior Court on Monday.
