14 Westport vehicles rifled through in 1 night; more patrols planned

WESTPORT - Police are deploying additional overnight patrols after at least 14 unlocked cars were rifled through and some had items stolen early Sunday morning.

Lt. Jillian Cabana also said one residence and three garages were burglarized.

“During the course of the residential burglary, suspects entered through an unlocked door while the residents were sleeping and at least one item was stolen. The three garages, two attached and one detached, had also been unsecured and were entered while the residents were home sleeping,” Cabana said in a release.

“Additionally, one vehicle was stolen, which had been left unlocked with the keys inside. The vehicle was later spotted by Fairfield Police and led them on a brief pursuit. A 17-year old juvenile suspect from Bridgeport was arrested following K-9 tracks by both Fairfield and Westport police. These crimes remain under investigation by the Westport Police Department.

Cabana said along with the additional patrol officers during the overnight hours, residents need to help police by locking their vehicles, their homes and activating security systems if their homes are equipped.

“We ask that residents please review their home surveillance from the early morning hours of December 23 and report any suspicious activity observed on their surveillance to the Westport Police Department via the non-emergency line (203) 341-6000.

Residents are also urged participate in the “9 PM Routine.” The 9PM Routine is a national public service campaign and a simple and effective way to prevent theft. It includes removing valuables from vehicles, locking car doors and bringing your keys inside.

“Take a few extra moments during your nightly routine to make sure the doors to your home are locked, your garage doors are secure and exterior lights are turned on,” she said.
