Westport police seize $110K in cash, ecstasy; woman charged

WESTPORT — Police confiscated a large amount of cash and some ecstasy pills after approaching a suspicious vehicle parked outside a closed store early Saturday morning.

As he talked to the one woman and two men in the car at 1:30 a.m., Cpl. Kevin Smith detected a strong odor of marijuana, according to the police report.

When a second woman emerged from the rear of the hardware store at 796 Post Road, Smith called for backup.

The female car occupant was in possession of a small amount of marijuana, for which she was given an infraction. Ninifa Ruiz, who came from behind the store, was found to be in possession of ecstasy pills.

Part of the backup team helping Smith was K-9 Onyx. Police said, when they searched the vehicle, they found $110,000 in a backpack. None of the four individuals claimed ownership of the backpack or the large amount of cash.

Ruiz, 30, of Everett, Mass., was taken into custody after the officers seized the pills and the money. She was charged with sale of a hallucinogen and possession of a controlled substance. Ruiz was released after posting $7,500 bail and is scheduled to appear Oct. 16 in Norwalk Superior Court.
