Westport Woman's Club issues grant for rides for seniors

The Westport Woman's Club has presented a $5,000 grant to a nonprofit organization that provides rides for the elderly and visually impaired.

The club awarded the Ruegg Grant, named after an endowment bequeathed by a member, to ITN Coastal CT, an on-call driving service. The organization provided volunteer drivers for 5,000 rides in Westport, Weston, Wilton, Fairfield, Norwalk and Easton last year. The club grant will be used for technology to help communication between drivers and dispatcher, and for the organization's community presentations.

Approximately $165,000 has been awarded through the Ruegg Grant by the Westport Woman's Club since the grant was established in 1985. Among the organizations receiving the grant in the past are the Westport Schools Permanent Art Collection, the Connecticut Theater Foundation, the Westport Library, the Staples Players, the Westport Rotary Club and the Westport Senior Center.

The grant was accepted by Lynn Goldberg, the ITN Coastal CT co-president, and Mary Ellen Marpe, ITN Coastal CT fundraising chairwoman.
