Three men charged with Westport car break-ins

A three-man operation to burglarize local motor vehicles was broken up early Friday, police said.

The arrests came after an Imperial Avenue resident called police about 3 a.m. Friday to report that a man was breaking into his car. The witness provided a description of the suspect's vehicle, and officers found the car nearby.

Gary Cappiello, 31, the driver, and Brian Martinez, 24, a passenger, both of Norwalk, were taken into custody and, under questioning, both admitted to driving another man through the area so he could break into vehicles and steal valuables, according to the report.

Police said a large machete-type knife was found behind on the floor of the car behind Cappiello's seat.

James Fleming, 20, of uncertain address, was identified as the third suspect, police said, and he was arrested a few hours later at a Norwalk motel.

Fleming admitted to breaking into vehicles in Westport, according to the report, and also allegedly identified Cappiello as the driver in the operation and Martinez as the lookout.

Fleming was charged with third-degree burglary and criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny.

Cappiello was charged with conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny and having weapons in a motor vehicles.

Martinez was charged with conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny

Bond of $2,500 was set for each man, and their cases will be heard in Norwalk Superior Court.
