1 seriously injured in 5-car crash on Merritt Parkway in Norwalk

NORWALK — One person was seriously injured in a five-vehicle pileup on the Merritt Parkway’s northbound lanes, causing lane closures and delays during peak night rush hour Tuesday.

Norwalk and Westport firefighters, Connecticut State Police and medics responded to the scene of the crash between Exit 40 and Exit 41. The crash was first reported around 4 p.m.

The chain-reaction crash, as it was described by Deputy Fire Chief Edward Prescott, closed both northbound lanes for an hour as firefighters worked to extricate two occupants from one of the vehicles.

The extrication of a male passenger took a couple minutes and he was transported to Norwalk Hospital by Westport EMS with non-life-threatening injuries, Prescott said.

“The driver’s extrication was a little more complicated and took around 15 minutes,” Prescott said. “The female driver was transported by Norwalk Hospital paramedics with serious injuries.”

The four other drivers involved in the collision were not injured, Prescott said.

The parkway remained closed for a brief time so three tow trucks could travel the wrong way on the parkway to remove the vehicles and clear the roadway.

The parkway reopened by 5:15 p.m.
