Darien man charged with drug possession after Westport K9 car search

WESTPORT — A Darien man was arrested after a police dog allegedly sniffed out drugs in his car during a traffic stop in Westport Saturday.

An officer smelled marijuana and noticed the driver was nervous, leading to a K9 search of his car May 6, police said. The officer had pulled over the driver, Mark Smeland, on the Post Road near the Norwalk border around 7:30 p.m.

Police dog Atlas searched the car and found a small backpack with a container inside of 16 grams of marijuana, as well as a tool for grinding the drug, according to police. Smeland, 23, of Oak Crest in Darien, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and of drug paraphernalia.

He was held on a $500 bond ahead of a May 17 court date, police said.
