State Police: Escaped Enfield inmate caught in Georgia

After 10 days of searching, Connecticut State Police announced Wednesday that the escaped inmate from an Enfield correctional facility was caught in Georgia.

Jerry Mercado, 25, escaped from Enfield’s Carl Robinson Correctional Institution on Jan. 7.

The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force received a tip that said Mercado was spotted at a gas station in Canton, Georgia.

Once Mercado is returned to Connecticut, State Police said he’ll be taken to the Northern Correctional Institution where he’ll be put on the agency’s highest level of supervision — administrative segregation.

“A full scale search and investigation by multiple public safety agencies/departments resulted in Mercado’s captures earlier today (Wednesday) by the Canton Georgia Police Department,” said State Police in a statement.
