SUV veers off Westport road, goes in Saugatuck River

WESTPORT - An SUV went off of Ford Road into the Saugatuck River Sunday night.

The driver was able to get outside the vehicle and was uninjured.

Assistant Fire Chief/Shift Commander Jeffrey Gootman said the Westport Fire Department went to the scene around 10 p.m. and found a single vehicle accident down an embankment.

The SUV was resting on its side in river.

The Fire Department responded with two engines, one rescue truck, along with the shift commander.

“The vehicle was secured and stabilized by the Rescue Company. Two firefighters wearing ‘cold water’ rescue suits entered the water and confirmed no additional occupants were in the vehicle.

The last Fire Department unit cleared the scene at 11:30 p.m.
