Boyle named Cohen award recipient

The Fairfield County Sports Commission announced Tuesday that Monroe native Ryan Boyle is the 2018 Chelsea Cohen Courage Award recipient. Boyle suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was 9-years old and his relentless push to recovery earned him a silver medal as a Para-cyclist riding a trike in the 2016 Rio Paralympics and two world championship titles in 2018.

Boyle will be honored at the Commission’s 14th annual Sports Night awards dinner on Monday, Oct. 15 at the Stamford Marriott at 6 p.m.

The Fairfield County Sports Commission created the Chelsea Cohen Courage Award in 2006. It is named after the late Chelsea Cohen, a former Norwalk High soccer star who was the Commission’s first Courage Award recipient. Cohen passed away in 2006 after a courageous bout with a rare form of cancer of the nervous system. The award recognizes the person in the sports community who has shown inspirational strength in battling life-altering obstacles.

Boyle was struck and dragged by a pickup truck when riding a Big Wheel trike in October 2003. He immediately went into a coma and had to have emergency brain surgery, during which part of his cerebellum was removed. After being in a coma for 2 months, years of recovery followed where Boyle had to learn how to breathe, swallow, talk, eat, stand, sit, and walk all over again.

The 24-year-old attended St. Joseph High School in Trumbull before moving to Georgia in 2011, where he began seriously training to become a world-class para-cyclist. His incredible hard work paid off when he won the silver in Rio in the Men’s Time Trial in the T1-2 classification besting 11 other riders from around the globe. In August 2018 he captured his first — and then second — world titles in the UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships in Italy.
