Update: The following show has been postponed, a Shubert official said. Here is the official word the Shubert received for release to the public:
“Due to artist illness, the performance of Purple Reign: The Prince Tribute Show, that was scheduled at the Shubert Theatre for Thursday, May 23 has been cancelled by the show’s promoter. Tickets purchased online and by phone will automatically be refunded. Please contact the Shubert Box Office at 203-562-5666 for additional information.”
Not that we’re experts on the late rock star Prince, but the tribute show “Purple Reign” seems to get the visuals right: costumes, jewelry, hair. And Jason Tenner’s performances vocally and on guitar have made the group the No. 1 Prince tribute band.
Tenner produces and stars in the show, but there’s a solid band with back up singers. Purple Reign has been performed mainly at casinos in the Las Vegas area for two decades, but now there’s a North American tour and the band will visit the Shubert Theatre in New Haven for one night Thursday, May 23.
Purple Reign aims to re-create the raw energy of Prince in his prime. It also features a tribute to Morris Day and The Time.
Accoring to Vegas.com, Tenner as a young man would watch the Prince film “Purple Rain” and then pause it and try to mimic Prince’s exact movements and facial expressions. He also would sit in his home studio and record himself singing and then listen to how they sounded against Prince’s voice. The result has scored highly with Prince fans.
Shubert Theatre, 247 College St., New Haven. Thursday, May 23, 7:30 p.m. $61-$41. 203-562-5666, Shubert.com
