The 52nd annual Westport Road Runners series began last Saturday with a 2.2 mile run that started and ended at Staples High School. James Osborn, of Ridgefield, won his first Road Runners race with a time of 11:37 as he led a record field of 216 runners over the old Staples cross country course. The first woman to finish was Kerri Lyons, of Wilton, with a new women's course record time of 11:49. Lyons finished third overall.
Recent Staples graduate Peter Elkind (11:43) finished second while Justin Lubeley, of Darien, finished fourth (12:09).
Mary Zengo of Wilton, finished second in the women's division with a time of 12:57. Darien's Liz Herbert (13:39) was the third woman to cross the finish line. The only other Westport resident that finished in the top ten was Lance Kichler, who placed eighth in 12:55.
The next scheduled Road Runners race will be held on Saturday, July 5 at 8 a.m. with a 3.05 mile race starting at Longshore Club Park. The record for the 3.05 mile course of 14:48 was set by Bruce Merrill, of Stamford, in 1978. The women's record of 17.19 was set by Sally Zimmer in 1981.
