Staples wrestling places seventh at Fairfield Ludlowe Invitational

The Staples wrestling team claimed seventh place at the 21-team Fairfield Ludlowe Invitational tournament that was held Saturday. Newtown topped host Ludlowe to win the overall title.

Wreckers junior captain Daniel Kogstad won the 195 pound title, defeating Clayton Ahearn (Lyman Hall) 3-2 in the final.

Kogstad, who moved down from 220 pounds this term, went 32-6 last season and ensured he started this campaign off on the right foot by winning all four of his matches.

"It was pretty cool, he wrestled very well," Staples coach David Bernstein said. "He took third last year (at 220) and to see him at top of podium this year is awesome."

Charles Lomanto finished third at 152 pounds, Jake Santo (145) and Justin Ludel (138) each placed fourth. Luke Montgomery (126) placed sixth.

Last season, the Wreckers placed ninth of 11 teams.

"It's a good improvement; I was pretty psyched," Bernstein said.

Next up for the Wreckers is a trip to Westhill Friday in an FCIAC showdown.

"That's what we are focused on," Bernstein said. "We forfeited a few weight classes, so we have to get bonus points to make up for the forfeits. If we don't do that it will be tough."
