The Staples softball team rallied to ensure it would qualify for the Class LL state tournament with a walk-off, 6-5 win over non-conference opponent Nonnewaug on Tuesday night at Greens Farms Elementary.
Trailing 5-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Wreckers (8-11) rallied to stun Nonnewaug. Chrissy McCarthy drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh that broke a 5-5 tie on a one-out, suicide bunt.
The Wreckers, which turned three double plays, honored their six seniors before the game -- Katie Burke, Emma Moskovitz, Lindsay Kiedaisch, Maya Mandell, Katherine Friend, and McCarthy.
McCarthy went 3-for-5 with two RBI for Staples, while Kiedaisch went 4-for-4. Emily Lustbader was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Staples has just one game remaining in the regular season, a road tilt against Trumbull on Friday.
