The Staples boys lacrosse team journeyed to New York over the weekend and returned with a hard fought 6-5 defeat to Mamaroneck (N.Y.) on Saturday night. The Wreckers dropped to 6-4 with the loss.
"Our defense played very well again," Staples coach Paul NcNulty said. "We had a lot of possessions, we just couldn't get shots off or score goals."
Will Johnson fired a hat trick in the loss for the Wreckers, who dropped their fourth in five games. Connor Chamberlin had a goal and an assist while Ross Goldberg had a goal and two assists. Goalie Cole Gendels made 10 saves.
The Wreckers got a goal with 5:21 left in the fourth quarter to pull to within 6-5, and had opportunities to tie it up late. While the defeat does Staples no harm in terms of the FCIAC race, playing schools in New York over the past several seasons has created a rivarly between the two areas.
"It's good to play teams out of our area," McNulty said. "This game has turned into a big game; (Mamaroneck) celebrated like it wasn't a normal game. We play plenty of good teams in Connecticut, but it adds something that the players don't see each other during the year."
Staples hopes it will have senior midfielder Pat Lesch back in the fold shortly. Lesch hasn't played a regular season game in over a year and could be the missing link when it comes to offensive success.
"It's good for the team to have him back playing, and it's even better and more emotional for Pat to finally get to play again," McNulty said.
Bucknell commit Reed Malas, a junior, scored three goals for Mamoroneck (10-3).
