The Staples boys golf team is usually in the mix by the time the postseason rolls around.
Although the Wreckers graduated a number of key scorers from last season's 13-2-1 squad, head coach Tom Owen believes a strong junior class is likely the key to a big season.
"I have a number of juniors, a lot that have two years of JV experience," Owen said. "It's really important to have that match experience; going out there and knowing you have to score. I think we'll be alright."
The Wreckers came home finished fifth at FCIACs. Staples graduated a host of seniors from that team, including Stephen Colodny, Ross Whelan, Devin Lowman, Jacob Meisel and Liam O'Leary.
Coltan Tanner, a transfer student from Texas, was slated to shoulder some of the gap this term. However, the sophomore suffered a broken arm in gym class and is likely out for the season.
Peter Richards, who was first team All-FCIAC last season, and captain Andrew Felman will likely be the two lowest scorers for the Wreckers this spring.
"Andrew is a tremendous leader," Owen said. "He gets the kids together, he'll drive kids up to driving range, arrange for them to play golf. "He's a step ahead of me all the time, checking with me what he can do. I'm really pleased with what he's done in the preseason."
Staples begins its season April 21 against Bassick, Central and Harding.
With three weeks to go before the start of the season, the Staples boys golf team has yet to swing a club on a course.
The Wreckers home course, Longshore, opens April 18. Staples will likely see time at Birchwood Country Club to prepare for the season.
"We don't take anyone for granted in this league," Owen said. "The FCIAC is the strongest league in the state, that's for sure."
