Seven years after graduating with Staples Class of 2007, the former hockey player has changed his view. Now, McCambley not only enjoys running; he's very good at it, too.
The 24-year-old Westport resident on Saturday won his second straight race in the Westport Road Runners series, a 6.8-mile run that started and finished at Compo Beach.
The victory marked MCambley's fourth consecutive top-three finish in the weekly series, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department.
McCambley ran the course in 38 minutes flat, topping a field of 160 competitors, a record turnout for the series' 6.8-mile race.
Cara Costich of Wilton was the first woman to finish. Her time of 42:36 was good for eighth place overall and was more than three minutes better than the next woman.
The 10-week series continues this Saturday with the eighth race -- an 8.4-mile run that starts and finishes at Burying Hill Beach off Beachside Avenue. Registration at the beach is at 7:30 a.m., and the race begins at 8 a.m.
Despite a comfortable margin of victory, McCambley's time was nearly three minutes off the course record of 35:05 set by Chase Pizzoni of Branford in 2012.
McCambley's victory followed his win Aug. 2 in a 5.85-miler that also started and finished at Compo Beach. He finished third in the two races before that -- a 4.8-mile run on July 19 and a 4.68-miler on July 26.
In the most recent race, Glaser, 19, finished second to McCambley for the second straight week. On Aug. 2, Glaser was 36 seconds behind him on the 5.85-mile course. Glaser won the subdivision for runners ages 19 and under both weeks.
In the women's division Saturday, Kendall Lyons of Wilton was second with a time of 45:51 (14th overall) and Eliza Tabacchi of Weston was third with 46:17 (22nd overall).
The 160-runner turnout included 111 males and 49 females. Among age groups, the largest turnout was men ages 50-59 with 36 finishers. Men 40-49 was next with 35 finishers.
The 10-week Saturday morning series has three races remaining, each longer than the previous one.
After this week's 8.4-miler, a 9.3-mile race is scheduled Aug. 23 and a concluding 10-miler is set Aug. 30.
