GFA roundup: Girls lacrosse falls in final seconds

Girls Lacrosse

The Dragons (6-3) defeated Chase Collegiate 16-9 April 23 before falling to Rye Country Day 17-16 April 25.

Against Chase, junior Campbell Goldsmith was the high scorer with five goals, while sophomore Ingrid Backe, junior Charlotte Krietler and freshman Kate Paliotta (Westport) each added three goals.

Against Rye Country Day, GFA jumped out to an 11-5 lead at the half. The Dragons gradually lost their lead as Rye tied the game at 15-15 with 3:29 left. With 1:06 left, GFA took the lead back 16-15. Rye won the next draw and tied the game 16-16 with 52 seconds left on the clock. Rye won possession of the ensuing draw and scored the game winning goal with 13 seconds left. Backe led the team with four goals, while Paliotta added three. Lucy Webb made 15 saves in the defeat.

Boys Lacrosse

GFA (6-4) posted a shutout April 21 when it defeated Harvey 10-0. Max Tarika with four goals, senior Conor Eckert with three goals while goalie Riley Grady made four saves.

The Dragons then lost 15-8 to Rye Country Day April 24.

GFA rebounded to defeat South Kent 9-5 April 26 despite falling behind in the first half. The Dragons outscored South Kent 7-2 in the second half. Dragons sophomore Jack Mackle led the way with four goals, Brendan Bieder had two goals and Grady made 11 saves.

Golf

GFA (3-5) fell 6.5-2.5 to St. Luke's April 22, beat Masters 8.5-0.5 April 23 and lost 9-0 to Rye Country Day April 24. Against St. Luke's, senior captain Mark Whittaker shot his personal best in route to winning his head-to-head match while also tying for Medalist honors with a 39. Sophomore Alex McKenna defeated his opponent for GFA's additional point. GFA lost the team total by a mere four shots. Senior captain Jack Wood, sophomore Lauren Telesz, along with freshmen Curtis Tauck (Westport) and Dustin Cook (Westport) all contributed in the close contest.

In GFA's victory against Masters, Whittaker led all scorers to earn two points for GFA. Wood defeated his opponent as did Telesz, along with Cook and Tauck.

Softball

GFA (1-6) lost to Rye Country Day 27-3 April 22 and Greenwich Academy 13-2 April 24.

The GFA Sailing team raced against Brunswick School at Indian Harbor Yacht Club April 23. Brunswick defeated GFA 3-0 in a best of five series in breezy conditions. GFA also raced in the NESSA O'Day qualifying regatta at Hotchkiss over the weekend. Senior Andrew McCarthy, senior Allie Nixon, senior Charlotte Frank, senior Olivia Taylor, sophomore Marguerite Courtemanche, sophomore Eliza Nixon, sophomore Josh Gleason and sophomore Carlonie Booth (Westport) competed in these two events.

Boys Tennis

GFA team (5-1) suffered its defeat of the season with a 4-3 loss at Brunswick April 23. The match couldn't have been any tighter with the score tied at three matches heading into the final match at No. 1 doubles. Scott Brown and William Wappler took the first set 6-4 but lost the second 5-7 and eventually the third 3-6. GFA was led by No. 1 singles player junior Gabe Tishman (6-1, 6-0), followed by senior captain No. 2 Kyle Wolfe (6-0, 6-0), sophomore No. 3 Cole Rummelsburg (Fairfield) (6-1, 6-1).

The Dragons rebounded to win 6-1 against The Canterbury School April 25.

Girls Tennis

GFA evened its record to 2-2 with a 7-0 win last week against FAA opponent King April 21. The Dragons only lost two sets in their matches.

Baseball

GFA lost 13-3 to Brunswick April 21, 10-2 to Hamden Hall April 23 and 4-3 to King April 25. Against Brunswick, senior Jeremy Platt (Westport) hit two singles. Against King, Platt pitched a solid 6 1/3 innings only giving up two earned runs. Sophomore Paul Bozzella (Westport) had two hits.
