GFA defeated the defending Housatonic Valley Athletic League champion and New England Class D finalist, Chase Collegiate School, 63-47 Dec. 4. All 12 Dragons saw action and contributed to the win. Junior Zach Baines scored 16 points, while pulling down 10 boards and blocking three shots. Senior captain Matt Tate had 15 points, seven assists and six steals.
Junior Jimmy Djema chipped in with 14 points and four assists.
GFA fell in its opener to New Canaan 13-0 Dec. 5. Scott Brown, Ryan Schendel and Reilly Carter came closest to winning matches for the Dragons.
The Dragons fell to Rye Country Day 7-0 Dec. 5. No. 2 Kaitlin Ball nearly pulled off a victory in her match, but lost 7-11 in the decisive fifth game.
GFA competed at the Canterbury Invitational Wrestling Tournament this past weekend. The Dragons finished seventh of 20 teams despite missing junior Jake Berman at 182 pounds. The Dragons competed in every weight class. Junior Ben Holcomb won the 138 championship in a dramatic three overtime battle.
