Ryan Burke continued his dominance of the Longshore Club Championship last weekend, winning the 55th Annual event for the third straight year and fourth in five years. Burke defeated Chris Meinke in a 36 hole match in the finals of the Championship Flight, 3 and 2.
"It feels great, it sure beats losing," Burke said. "I've played a lot less golf lately; life gets in the way of golf sometimes."
Burke, 44, has lived in Westport since fourth grade and played golf at Staples. Burke has played at Longshore for over 30 years.
Burke won three matches to advance to the finals. He defeated A.J. Izzo (7 up), Tim Romano (4 up) and Steve Watson (6 up).
The match with Meinke was far closer. Meinke led by a hole after 18 holes before Burke made his charge. Burke shot 4 under par over the final 12 holes, sealing the match on the 34th hole.
"There was some terrible weather to start," Burke said. "Chris Nienke was all I could handle. The goal was always to win."
In the First Flight Championship, Gavin McMahon became champion by defeating Rob Summerlin 6 and 5 while shooting 76. His road to the championship included wins over Jeff Strauss (5 up), Greg Wrapp (1 up) and 2 up over Joe Bottone.
In the Second Flight Championship, Richard Hyman defeated Jim Harvey one up. To get to the finals, Hyman had outstanding scores in his first two matches of 77 and 78.
