Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County is holding a training session for mature, compassionate adults from Westport and Weston to serve as Samaritan Volunteers. Samaritan Volunteers help homebound patients with transportation needs such as driving to medical appointments, running errands, or picking up groceries and medical supplies. The volunteers use their own vehicles to help support patients and their family members or caregivers.
The one-session training course is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will be held at the offices of Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Fairfield County.
In the training course, volunteers will learn about safety issues, different types of diseases and how best to accommodate patients within the scope of the program. Volunteers are provided with ongoing support and supervision by the organization's volunteer coordinator.
"This program appeals to individuals who feel a genuine desire to help their neighbors," said Laurie Petrasanta, volunteer coordinator for the visiting nurse organization. "Samaritan Volunteers give of their time to help our patients remain in their own homes safely so that they can enjoy a better quality of life."
The training session will be held at the organization's offices, 761 Main Ave. in Norwalk. For more information, or to register for the volunteer training course, call 203-834-6341, ext. 316.
