Teens take over Westport Y on their night

With the blare of a karaoke machine, the smack of ping pong paddles and basketballs rebounding off backboards, the volume level at the Westport Weston Family Y on Friday evening was almost deafening -- just the way the young crowd liked it.

Teen Night at the Y was designated for youngsters in the sixth through eighth grades, with an array of activities catering to their interests. Among the other features of the evening were swimming, foosball, air hockey and bingo.

"Kids enjoy a night away from their parents and get to hang out with their friends, while parents get a couple of hours off and seem very happy when they come to pick up their children," said Meg George, the Family Y's director of camp and youth activities.

"The program fits in with the Y's mission to make and keep kids healthy, not locked up in a basement with video games," she added. "It's a safe environment, supervised and social in an old-fashioned sense."
