Man charged at Westport RR station with stealing catalytic converters

Clifford St. Arnault, 35, of East Haven, faces charges after police said he was caught cutting catalytic converters from vehicles at the Saugatuck train station.

A man suspected of stealing catalytic converters from vehicles in Westport and other area communities was taken into custody Thursday while driving through parking lots at the Saugatuck train station.

Clifford St. Arnault, 35, of East Haven, had several "recently cut" catalytic converters in his possession when police searched his truck about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the police report. Police said they also found a reciprocating saw, motorcycle parts and vehicle tire rims in the truck.

St. Arnault was taken into custody without incident and charged with fifth-degree larceny and possession of burglary tools.

He is being investigated in connection with several instances of catalytic-converter thefts, police said.

Bond was set at $5,000
