A Greens Farms Academy senior has won a $1,000 prize in a national high school science contest for her research on ovarian cancer.
Francesca Garofalo of Norwalk received the cash award for being named a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search. She was one of 300 semifinalists selected from nearly 1,800 applicants in 45 states and abroad, GFA said in a news release.
The school also was awarded $1,000.
Garofalo began her research last summer while working in the Discovery to Cure Internship program at Yale School of Medicine, GFA said. The title of her project is "Chemosensitization of High-grade Serous Ovarian Carcinoma via Calcium Signaling."
Of 40 students chosen as national finalists in the contest, a Greenwich student is the only one from Connecticut, GFA said.
