Firefighters untangle I-95 pile-up between trucks, SUV

Emergency crews were dispatched to a serious accident between three vehicles Tuesday morning on Interstate 95 southbound between Exits 18 and 17.

Deputy Fire Chief Robert Kepchar said the accident involved a vehicle transporter, box truck and a Chevrolet Suburban. "The Suburban was hit from behind and was pushed into the vehicle transporter," he said.

Kepchar said firefighters arriving on the scene checked all three drivers for injuries.

"The driver of the Chevy escaped serious injury and was treated at the scene by Westport EMS and released.," he said.

He said firefighters worked to control a leaking gasoline tank on the Chevy and had to use "speedi dri and absorbent booms to contain the fuel spill."

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was notified of the spill, he added.

Tow trucks were called and transported all three vehicles away from the scene. Kepchar said the State Police are in charge of the accident investigation.

The accident took place around 8:38 a.m. Tuesday and the last fire vehicle left the scene at 9:41 a.m.

Kepchar said the incident was one of three accidents that town firefighters responded to Tuesday morning and was "the most serious." There were no details immediately available on the others.
