Members of Positive Directions, the Teen Awareness Group and Westport police pose at police headquarters where they collaborated to install a permanent collection box for unwanted or outdated prescription drugs.

A collection box for unused or outdated prescription drugs is now permanently in place at the front lobby of Police Department headquarters, 50 Jesup Road.

The collection box was installed after police officials saw a "need for a permanent prescription drug container after participating in the `Drug Take Back' programs over the last several years," Capt. Sam Arciola said in a news release.

People can now use the box to "dispose of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs in a safe and environmentally responsible way," he said.

The service is free and anonymous, according to police officials.

The following will not be accepted in the collection box:

- Opened containers of liquid, unless they are completely sealed.

- Syringes.

- No medications or other waste can be left outside the drop box.
