Five singer-actors with Broadway experience have been cast in the Westport Country Playhouse's second production of the season, the musical revue "Sing for Your Shakespeare."
The show, opening Tuesday, June 3, is based on an original idea produced for the 92nd Street Y's "Lyrics & Lyricists."
Directed by playhouse artistic director Mark Lamos, "Sing for You Shakespeare" examines how the American songbook has been inspired by Shakespeare, the theater said.
The music includes selections from Cole Porter's "Kiss Me, Kate," Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's "West Side Story," and Rodgers and Hart's "The Boys from Syracuse," plus numbers by Duke Ellington, Frank Loesser and others.
The cast includes:
Karen Akers (Broadway's "Nine" and "Grand Hotel")
Darius de Haas (Broadway's "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and "Rent")
Constantine Germanacos (Broadway's "Evita")
Laurie Wells (Broadway's "Mamma Mia!)
Britney Coleman (Westport's "Into the Woods" and New York's "Brush Up Your Shakespeare).
Both Akers and Coleman appeared in the 92nd Street Y's production of "Sing for Your Shakespeare." The New York Times said that production was "revelatory," "rousing," and had "a free-spirited vitality," according to the playhouse.
In Westport, the show will run through June 22.
Lamos said in the release that the range of the Westport cast -- from cabaret to musical theater, Broadway to jazz to rock -- and Dan Knechtges' choreography infuse the show with "new vitality."
The revue's running time is approximately 90 minutes with no intermission.
The "Sing for Your Shakespeare" performance schedule is: Tuesdays at 8 p.m.; Wednesdays at 2 and 8 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 3 and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m.
